Keep reading for some summer safety tips for pets that will have you enjoying the summer without issue:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where to Start<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The heat is a major threat to summer pet safety. Heat stroke can occur rather quickly, so <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orovilleanimalhealthcenter.com\/services\/wellness-preventive-care.html\">prevention <\/a>should be the focus. Pet owners can mitigate the risks associated with the heat in these ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Exercise with your pet during the early morning and evening hours.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Always have cool, clean water on water.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Follow this rule: \u201cIf it\u2019s too hot for you to walk on without shoes, it\u2019s definitely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orovilleanimalhealthcenter.com\/blog\/hot-dog-keep-your-pets-paws-safe-from-the-summer-heat\/\">too hot for your pet.\u201d\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take breaks in the shade.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maintain adequate ventilation inside the home.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make delicious frozen pet treats.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep your pet\u2019s coat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orovilleanimalhealthcenter.com\/blog\/preparing-your-pet-for-summer-a-guide-to-keeping-them-safe-and-healthy\/\">trimmed during the summer<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Watch the humidity levels as this can make it feel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orovilleanimalhealthcenter.com\/blog\/springtime-means-your-pets-will-start-shedding-dont-worry-theyre-healthy\/\">hotter to pets<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>While all pets can be vulnerable to the heat, pets that are very young\/old, overweight, or battling health conditions may be at higher risk. Likewise, brachycephalic breeds have shorter snouts that inhibit efficient panting. This reduces their ability to regulate internal body temperature.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Know the Signs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Pets can sweat through the pads of their paws, but it\u2019s not enough to cool them down if they become overheated. Similarly, panting can help to regulate temperature but if panting becomes excessive, they may quickly experience other symptoms of heatstroke, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Excessive drooling<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vomiting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Diarrhea (with or without blood)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Weakness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lethargy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Breathing difficulty<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mobility issues<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Collapse<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Seizures<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Heat stroke in pets must be addressed promptly and can require <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orovilleanimalhealthcenter.com\/blog\/how-to-create-an-emergency-plan-that-includes-your-pet\/\">emergency<\/a> care. Move a pet to a cool, dim location with good cross-ventilation. Offer little sips of water and apply lukewarm compresses to the body. Temperatures inside the vehicle, even when the windows are cracked, can soar above 100 degrees in less than an hour.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">General Tips<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the heat, summer provides other dangers.
